I remember the fire and smoke and I remember the Dust-Off. We were at the base of the hill in an old grown up paddy. I remember Freddie Mac building a hootch on a dike with his pancho to get some shade. Maybe we set up there. I remember moving out next day not too early because Capt Gibson liked to sleep in. We crossed the river stood down for a while and moved toward what become Ghost Mtn. We found some hootches and John Wayned them Finding still lite fires with bunkers under them, no body home. Started up the hill and ran to banana trees full of little green bananas. I chopped one down with on chop from my gook machete that I carried from the Ashau. It was like a giant celery stalk and my first thought was not to take cover behind a banana tree. Ate some bananas and moved up the ridge line where we set up in an old NDP. Last peaceful for a while, Peace Cotton.
